If you’re someone who wears makeup every day, you know how quickly products and accessories can get dirty. From time to time, we need to set aside some time for the not-so-glamorous task of cleaning our makeup brushes. There are many easy ways to clean makeup brushes. Below are our 4 tips to keep your brushes soft and ready for your next makeup application!

Use a neutral shampoo or makeup remover

First, wet the bristles of the brush. It’s ideal to wet only this part, without letting water run down into the handle. This will ensure that the glue holding the brush together remains intact. Next, gently scrub the bristles with your hands using a few drops of neutral shampoo, preferably pH-balanced and alcohol-free. Rinse under running water. If needed, repeat this process until there is no residue of foundation or other products left. Then, reshape the bristles back to their original form and let them air dry.

Another option is to wet the brush with a makeup remover product and wait a few minutes before rinsing under water.

Use a rubber mat

There are various types of rubber mats available for cleaning makeup brushes. These are handy tools, especially for those who have many brushes. They provide some relief for your hands and allow you to wash multiple brushes at once.

If you have one of these mats, simply drop a little bit of neutral shampoo onto the bristles of your brushes and rub them against the mat in circular motions with some water. Be gentle. There’s no need to use excessive force. This will help maintain the correct shape of the bristles.

What about sponges?

Increasingly popular, we couldn’t forget to mention this product beloved by makeup enthusiasts. In this cleaning process, you need to be very gentle – really! If you apply too much force while scrubbing, you might easily tear your sponge. So, take it easy!

But there’s no mystery to washing this type of applicator. Take a bar of soap (even your regular bath soap will do) and press it lightly all around the sponge. Then, gently rub it with your hands. To “rinse” your sponge, simply squeeze and release it with the palm of your hand. Do this several times until the water from inside comes out completely clean and without any product residue.
